Echoes... Episode 2

Ire’s tears jolted her from sleep. He has been crying excessively recently. She had taken him to the hospital and the doctors couldn’t really find anything wrong, but he wouldn’t stop crying. She didn’t know what to do anymore.

“Mama Ire, answer that boy now”

Mrs Akpan was the woman living in the first room of their 15 room face-me- I –nod–you apartment. Despite her room being the first, she always seemed to know what was going on in all the other rooms. She was known as the trouble maker and warrior of the house, everyone knew her and always did their best to stay clear of her. In fact, the kids had a song for her;

“Everyday na wahala, everyday na palava”

“ Everyday na argumenti, every nighti fight”

” The person wey dey cause am”

“ Hin name na Mrs Akpan”

“ Mrs Akpan na the trouble maker wey dey for our yard”

She would find sticks and stones and make to run after them. Of course, with their tiny swift legs and might that only kids possessed, she never caught them.

            “I am answering him already”

“Okay o. if he continues crying, bring him to my room let me give him one of the mixtures my mother brought for me from the village. It even works faster than any medicine and works for all kinds of sicknesses”.

“Thank you Mrs Akpan, he will be fine”

“Okay o. you know, as a young mother, you need to learn that you cannot fold your hands and watch your child die, you know people are evil”

“God forbid! My son will not die. Thank you ehn, he will be fine”

“Okay o, but hope you know…”

“He will be fine o Mrs Akpan, thank you”

That was the issue with Mrs Akpan, she never got tired. She had so many other things on her mind today and Mrs Akpan was the last of them. Ire couldn’t afford to fall sick now; she needed him to be healthy. She had to work; she had to get money because she was fast running out of provisions.

Toju never imagined this kind of life for herself. In her wildest imagination –despite her very creative and wild mind- she never for once taught that at 18 she would be out of school and singlehandedly raising a child. She had grown up as the apple of her father’s eyes.  She was among those young girls privileged to have a wealthy and doting father. Although a disciplinarian, her father had a weakness and it was her. She knew this early enough and even from her nurseries had made up her mind to always do him proud. She was always among the best in her class back then in Command, and although double promotions were not allowed in her school, she was encouraged to write her common entrance examination in primary 4 and at the age of 10, she was already in Junior Secondary School where she continued exceling. Throughout her secondary school, the name Toju was a household name. Everyone knew and loved her. This was because despite how rich her parents were, she still maintained a level of humility and it won her so much respect and admiration. She also represented her school in several competitions, most of which she won. Despite the chain of wealth they controlled, her father had managed to instil responsibility and independence in her and this shaped her into a strong and opinionated young woman. By age 16, she was already in the University. Despite her many options, she had chosen to school in OAU mainly because of the plenty legendary stories she heard about the school. Plus, she had an independent mind and somewhat felt a private school might be choking for her.

Now, she was out of school, her father had no idea where she was and despite how mad and disappointed in her he was, she knew he would be moving heavens and hell in search of her right now. But rather than face him, or face the world, she would flee and clean up her mess in her own way.

                                                            *********

“Bryan, we cannot go ahead with picking a date without hearing from your dad, it’s not possible”!

“Babes, please let’s just go ahead. Dad is fine with whatever date we choose”.

“I really don’t get you anymore Bryan. You’ve been acting so funny. You know how involved dad has been in this and you know he would want to know about choosing dates so what is wrong with you?

How was he going to explain to Aisha that the 3 months he gave his father had elapsed and he was about making his marriage decisions on his own since his father had refused to bend? Although he told him that he would attend the wedding, he has made it clear that he doesn’t want to be a part of it. Aisha doesn’t know it but it was the main reason he opted for a small and quiet wedding. He had had 3 more conversations about this issue with his dad since the last one, but nothing has changed, Dad hasn’t moved his grounds at all.

“Honey, please don’t make an issue where there is none. I know dad and I know he is fine with whatever decisions we make.

“Okay Bryan, its fine. Tomorrow, I will go see dad myself and I will ask him what he thinks about our date, hope I’m allowed to do that sir?

Aisha was getting angry and he knew she had every right to. She had so much respect for his dad and his approval meant a lot to her. He had managed to deprive her of the regular big ceremony attached to weddings in their tradition. She lied to her parents that she and Bryan have decided to do a very small and simple wedding. They struggled with this because she was their only girl but then, she won their approval eventually. It’s not like she wanted a big wedding herself, she liked things simple, but then she wouldn’t have minded something quite elaborate just for her parents. She was their only girl and she knew they would love it. But she loved Bryan. If he strongly wanted a small wedding, she was ready to please him; the important thing was to finally become his wife. However, she needed to hear from his dad. She recognised and respected the bond between Bryan and his dad. All they had was each other, they were best of friends, they loved each other beyond words and she knew it.

“Fine, there’s something I have to tell you”

            “Oh okay”

He did not want to tell her, he knew it would break her heart. But at this point, it was better she heard from him than from his dad.

“Errmm , Dad has some reservations”

            “Reservations?”

“Yes baby. Dad doesn’t want us getting married”

            “What!!! I don’t understand”

“Baby, I love you more than life itself. You mean the world to me and nothing and no one will come in between us.

“Why doesn’t dad want me? What did I do wrong?

Bryan couldn’t stand the tears that had begun streaming down her cheeks. He knew this would happen and that is why he had hidden it from her all these months. He didn’t want her to go through this pain she was now going through

“Baby, it doesn’t change anything. I cannot live my life without you. Common, I can’t even stay 2 days without seeing you. Dad doesn’t hate you; in fact he tells me how much he loves you. He simply said he feels uneasy about us getting married. And you know, I’m all dad has got for so many years, I’m sure that is why he feels this way”

Bryan’s explanation wasn’t enough. The way Mr Chike always welcomed and took care of her whenever she went to see him was a complete contrast to what Bryan was saying. She had to see him.

            “I need to see him.”

“Baby you don’t have to. Please baby, stop crying”

He held her and tried to stop her flowing tears.

“I will take care of this”

“Don’t deprive me of this Bryan, I need to see him. I need to beg him not to take the one thing that keeps me breathing away from me. I need to beg him to please give us his blessings. I need to let him know that I intend to care for you and cherish you every day of my life. Without you, I don’t know what my life will look like. Please honey, give me the chance to prove my love for you and win the blessings of your father”

This time, even Bryan couldn’t hold his own tears. At that moment, he hated his dad.

“Okay babe, we will go together. We will go talk to dad together. But I need you to know that whatever comes out of our talk, I am not going back on my decision to spend the rest of my life with you. I choose you, now and forever, I choose you.”

It felt like the whole world was crumbling right before her eyes. The first day Bryan took her home to see his dad, she had been extremely nervous. She knew how much Bryan loved his dad. He was his father and mother at the same time. He told his dad everything so much so that she had sometimes felt a pang of jealousy towards him. As soon as he came to meet them in the sitting room that day, she had immediately gone down on both knees like she always did to elderly people and this gave her the chance to keep looking downwards so she wouldn’t have to look him in the face. He had given her a magical smile and asked her for a hug. That sealed it for her. Ever since that time, he had been nothing but caring, loving and very welcoming towards her. But then, knowing what she knows now, she began to put two and two together. There had been times when she had called him, he hadn’t picked up and still didn’t make to return her calls. There had been times when he had turned down her visit claiming he was busy when Bryan had already told her earlier that he was going to be available. She had always dismissed any thoughts that might have crawled in then since the love and care he showed at other times greatly outweighed them. Now, she is realizing that the man who holds the centre to Bryan’s heart is the very person who will stand as hindrance to their marriage.
“It wouldn’t happen, hell no! No one will take Bryan away from me, not even his father”! She thought.

Echoes... Episode 1

For the past 2 months, we have committed ourselves to learning from women entrepreneurs who have imparted our generation and left their inerasable imprints. We still haven’t finished yet and in fact still have so many women willing to share their stories so we can learn from them. However, for the sake of those special friends who have devotedly read our entrepreneurship stories despite not being one, I have decided to branch a new route.

Many of them always read the blog and sent messages of encouragement but still implored me to do something for them since they are not entrepreneurs. So for them, I will be starting a series on a short story.
Now guys, sit back and relax as we enjoy our first short story on the blog; ECHOES….

This story is inspired by real events however; characters and places are purely a creation of the imagination of Ife Alonge and bear no resemblance to any actual persons or places living or dead.

20th of every month has always been considered special and significant to Toju, it reminded her of the day she birthed the most precious human being in her life. Ire’s pregnancy had been a difficult one; not just from the common complications and inconveniences experienced by most pregnant women but mainly because of the psychological and emotional trauma she had experienced as a result of her pregnancy. Those 9 months and one week had been simply traumatic. She had gotten pregnant at 17 and unlike the norm these days, chose to keep it. That was her undoing; it was the beginning of the lonely and hellish life she now found herself living. Ire’s birth had surprisingly been an easy one so the nurses and midwife were confused at the ‘storm’ of tears and wails Toju seemed to be engulfed in.  Anyways, 2 days after delivery, she was discharged and it was time to face her biggest fears.

*****************************************************************************

Bryan knew better than to put up a fight against his father; he could never win. But his mind was made up, he knew who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with and absolutely nothing was going to change that. His father had to agree or be left out of the whole ceremony. I mean, he was 29 and old enough to make his own decisions. He had decided to give his father another 3 months to think about it before he went ahead with or without his permission to marry his queen. The way he felt about Aisha could not be changed no matter how hard he tried – he had tried severally by the way- so he wasn’t going to keep trying. She is cautious, calm and by far the most kind-hearted human being he had ever met. She had a heart of gold, was always quick to forgive and was the calming effect that kept him sane in his crazy world. Her beauty -that’s another story entirely- in fact, everything about her captivated his heart. Her big purely white eyeballs that stared at him like she could see deep into his soul always sent his heart racing. Her caramel skin, prominent dimples, voluptuous body and beautifully protruding forehead melted his heart and that of many others. He knew he was lucky to have her. She was a naturally endowed beauty that several men like him sought for and he loved her like no other.
“Dad, please give us a chance. You haven’t given me one good reason I shouldn’t marry her, who does that? At least tell me why”
But Mr David Chukwuwike was not about to give in. For the past 6 months that his son Bryan had brought up the issue of Aisha and even introduced her to the family, he had felt certain uneasiness about her. She seemed like a very good girl; in fact he knew she was a good girl. Her mannerisms and attitude towards people; both old and young were virtues not found among most young women these days. She had completely knelt down with both knees touching the ground, she had insisted on washing the dishes after their meal and she had answered every question he asked her very intelligently. So, why was he so uneasy about her? even he couldn’t answer this question Bryan so desperately wanted him to answer. She was a good Christian; he saw this in the way she prayed before their meal. It wasn’t just the regular “Bless this food oh Lord we pray”, her prayer had been short but with such in-depth that for a minute there, she challenged his Christianity. He knew it also had nothing to do with her tribe. He had never been of the school of thought that an igbo man must marry an igbo girl, in fact he had always been an advocate for inter-tribal marriages. So why on earth wouldn’t he stop feeling uneasy anytime he thinks of his son getting married to her? Who wouldn’t want something good for his own son? He couldn’t answer these questions just yet but he intended to. In the meantime, Bryan had to forget about marrying her, at least not just yet.

“Bryan, I have told you, there is something wrong with you marrying that girl and you wouldn’t make me support such union out of my will, it is either you listen or you go on without me!”

Bryan couldn’t believe that his dad was actually proposing that he went ahead with the marriage without his consent. Over the years, his dad has been his pillar, best friend and mentor. He is the reason why he never for once felt the emptiness of not having a mother. His mother had died just few hours after his birth and for his sake, his father had remained unmarried and completely devoted his time and attention to taking care of him. Up until now, his dad has always supported his every decision. He heard stories of parents telling their children courses to read or career paths to follow, but his father was never like that. He always taught him to choose and follow his heart in making any decisions. When he told his father he wanted to study fine art in school, he had given him his full support and even bought books for him on several occasions. When he graduated and started his career as an artiste, his father gave him his full support and in fact provided funds for the setup of his first gallery. How come in making this one important decision, he is stubbornly choosing to go against him, just how come? At that moment, his phone rang; it was his sunshine.

            “Hi honey”
Just the sound of her angelic voice strengthened his resolve, it was Aisha or no other.

            “Babe, how are you”
“I’m okay. Come, have you forgotten we are to meet at my aunt’s shop this afternoon ni?

“Oh my, I totally forgot. I’m having a talk with dad at the moment but we should be rounding up in a bit. Would meet you there in 30 minutes”

“Oh okay, hope it’s nothing serious sha?
Aisha had no idea what he had been going through with his dad for the past 6 months. He always made her comfortable any time she was around so she did not suspect at all that he wasn’t in support of his son marrying her, he wasn’t about to tell her.

“Nothing serious babes, would be with you soon”
“Just hurry up o, or are you afraid I will ask you to drop your 50 naira in my aunty’s shop, stingykoko?

They both burst into laughter.

50 naira was a joke between them; it was actually the story of how they met. She had gone out of her hostel to buy bread one afternoon on getting to mama Bola’s shop, she met mama Bola’s husband in a heated conversation with a young man. He had come to buy the same Yale bread she had come to buy. However the squabble for change was what drew her attention to him. The baba selling the bread didn’t have change to give him and that was why he was still waiting.

“Oya oga, why you no kuku leave this change for this sisi make she use am buy her own bread”

Of course, she knew he would want to oblige and probably take that as his chance to get talking with her, she wasn’t about to let him.

“Ah baba, if say na another day I fit drop am, but you see ehn, this 50naira dey important today, I no fit drop am”

Seriously! She couldn’t believe a guy would find it difficult to let go of just 50naira to a lady. He apologised to her, eventually got his change and then left. She was angry or maybe disgusted is the word, but that event placed him in her heart for a long time. After that day, she seemed to see him everywhere on campus. From meeting him at old buka to sitting adjacent him in Amphi theatre, their friendship became inevitable. Eventually, he approached her and they got talking. The first thing she noticed was that he was a giver. He could give everything he had to help someone else. So she quickly dismissed the initial thoughts she had of him and the rest became history. However, from time to time, she still teased him about the ‘stingykoko’ stunt he had pulled the first day they met.

“Just give me a few minutes let me round up with dad”

“Okay dear, see you soon. Love you”

            “Yea, bye”

That was strange. Bryan has never replied her ‘I love you‘ with that in fact, he has always kicked against it. She suspected something was wrong, but then dismissed the thoughts since she was extremely sure Bryan loved her even more than he loved himself. It was probably out of courtesy to his dad.

“I have to go now dad, Aisha is waiting for me”
"No problem son, but the earlier you let go of that girl, the better’"

            “Bye"

LESSONS FOR THE JOURNEY: OYINADE AJE

Even though most people think closing down my business was a wrong move, I believe I made the best decision, I am not afraid to start over! - Oyinade Aje

I really must apologise for my failure to post on the blog last week and yesterday. I have never been as busy as I am now after resignation. Plus, there are certain 'beautiful' places you go to that network seems to be in absentia, kindly bear with me please.
Today, we have one of the most unique 'girl entrepreneur' so far. Her story is so special that I was greatly challenged and I decided she will be the only one we will talk about today. I couldn't get a picture of her on the internet, but then her words and experiences are what matter the most.

Join me as we learn from our special 'girl' for the day...

NAME: OYINADE AJE

BUSINESS: SATIN & LACE

POST: MANAGING DIRECTOR

INDUSTRY: FASHION &STYLE

1.       Has never been the type to say “I can’t”

2.       Always prioritized her spouse’s opinions in the decision making process of her business

3.       Watchword was honesty and fair play

4.       Along the line, she lost the energy and passion for her business

5.       Decided to close down her business after 20years of running it

6.       Regretted not having had a partner. That might have helped lessen the burden she had to single-handedly carry for 20 years and she might not have had t0 close down her business

7.       Biggest challenges has been how to control and manage the Nigerian worker

8.       Learnt a huge lesson in the way she treated her staff. In a bid to get nothing short of excellence from them, she constantly screamed them down. She however learnt that that isn’t the best way to deal with staff.

Her Advice to us…

1.       Whatever it is you find yourself doing, do with excellence

2.       To excel in what you do, you must give yourself wholly to it and for that, you need to have passion.

3.       At the point when you begin to feel and get convictions that it is time to move on in your business, don’t be afraid to take that bold courageous step

4.       Ensure you have a good organisational structure from the every beginning

5.       If you know you are good with the practical side of running a business than the business side, it will be wise to get a trusted partner. Don’t try to push yourself to do both, you might get drained and eventually lose complete interest in your business.

6.       Learn to always take responsibility for whatever happens to you, do not be quick to pass the buck

7.       Learn to place good value on your creativity and not sell yourself short

8.       Learn to treat your staff with respect, generosity and firmness. Never embarrass them in public. Read up Sir Richard Branson’s book, he sure has good results from treating his staff the right way.

9.       Learn to give yourself a pat on the back every once in a while even when no one else will

10.   You can minimise the amount of mistakes you will make by learning from other people that have gone before you

11.   Don’t hide or run away from your challenges. They can only make you better!

Now lets talk…

1.       There is a time for everything, understand the times

2.       Closing down her business after 20 years wasn’t giving up, it was moving on to bigger things

3.       The moment she realised she had lost the drive, passion and strength to continue running her business, she knew it was time to move on and she did.

4.       She has openly admitted her mistakes in some ways she ran her business and she has given us tips on things we shouldn’t do, lets learn from that.

5.       This courageous woman is exemplary to me. She is the true definition of learning from other people’s mistakes. She has made hers and taught us not to make same, so please learn!
Till next week guys, ensure you keep reaching for bigger heights.
